Exclamation Anthem of the Sea caught in bad storm !

This coming from a passenger aboard Anthem

We are on the Anthem right now, left NY yesterday, we sailed in a storm that intensified very quickly, Captain tried to turn ship but waited too long. We have been stuck in 125+ mph winds 30+ foot waves for 4 hours. Captain said they are in communication with the coast guard, struggling to point ship into wind but can't move forward. All passengers told to stay in cabins water entered ship on upper decks, large white structure broke off top of ship landed in pool. At the height of storm waves breaking above the top of life boats and ship listing almost 45 degrees, with wind looked like a total white out. Conditions are improving but damage all over ship, crew look concerned and sounded very concerned on intracom. Some passengers sitting in muster stations.

How do you get 125mph winds without a hurricane or tornado? Didn't know that was possible.

guesstimating I would imagine , never the less a real issue with damage to the ship.
Passangers will get of the ship in the morning to head home, ship too damaged to continue

I can't find anything else on this so I can't say how true what I'm reading is. I can't imagin someone would make all this up but who knows. I see the ship has a scheduled port day in Orlando . Guess we'll find out more tomorrow.

I just read that it's the ship that's going back . It's said that the storm became much stronger than expected and fast.

Sometimes ' ship ' happens. I'm happy that the passengers and crew are OK.

Makes me wonder if there will be any repercussions for the Captain? It seems pretty irresponsible to purposely sail into a storm to try and beat it. That storm was no joke, i feel bad for everyone that was on board!

I wonder how long it will take to get the Anthem ship shape.

I should be speaking to my neighbor Sandy (who is on the Anthem now) sometime on Thursday .

One of my daughters and her family are going on a cruise leaving Saturday taking the same route as the Anthem.I hope there are no more storms.

They will have to work fast to get the ship ready to sail so quickly.

Manuel, from reading on all the internet blogs; they should have three or four days to get things back and running. We shall see.

I don't think that any strong storms are predicted but it's going to be quite frigid.

I spoke to my neighbor today who was on the Anthem. She said she ate candy bars and went to sleep. When she got up everything was fine. She opted to stay on board after the ship docked and left yesterday morning .
She plans on cruising again on the Anthem later this year.
She also said that the ship's Captain was in constant contact with both the Coast Guard and Royal Caribbean.

After reading on CNN this afternoon that it has now been disclosed that one of the azipod power units had 4 burnt bearings as a result of the storm, thus rendering it inoperable, perhaps that helps explain why the ship limped home at 6-7 knots. Further, it was disclosed that some lifeboats were also damaged in the same storm. I guess some explaining is overdue since the captain, and Royal Caribbean, had reported the passengers were never in danger. I might also add that I was not impressed by the fact that RC posted a message on their website about the situation only once the ship actually entered waters inside NJ.

Snowbird, I would add a grain of salt to comments about the Anthem of the on CNN Seas. They tend to have very negative views of the cruise industry.
Going into a storm is serious business for sure but the Anthem did quite well otherwise lives would have been lost.
Now after the fact all the weather forecasters are saying that this storm had been predicted. The reality is that winds of 50 mph were what had been predicted. In 2007 we encountered winds of 70 mph while on a cruise and no damage occurred to the ship.

First, my apology to Manuel. The source for my comments were not sourced from CNN, rather, they were from a publication called: The Maritime Executive. The headline read - Anthem of the Seas Suffered Propulsion Damage in Storm.

In this article are damage assessments attributed to the US Coast Guard involving both the azipod propulsion system, and some of the lifeboats.

No need to apologize.

I will say this sailing in the Atlantic in the winter can be a rough and bumpy experience.
In the end I think that this will be an experience from which something has been learned.
