Default Carnival Sunshine

Just returned from an 8 day cruise on the Carnival Sunshine. Traveling with us my son and daughter-in-law. This was our 24th cruise (21 with Carnival) and their 2nd (both Carnival). We had selected the Sunshine as it met their vacation time availability. My wife and I are retired. Enough of the that.

Sailed from Port Canaveral. Drove down from Virginia day before. Stayed at the Radisson and utilized their cruise package. It was simply very easy and transportation to and from the port was excellent. We debarked at 0800, met the shuttle and were on our way back to Virginia at 0830. I would recommend this package to anyone who needs to arrive a day early for a cruise.

The cruise was a good one and all of us enjoyed it. Our wait staff Louie, Jon-Jon and Alexasandria were wonderful and met all our needs. Our room steward Jose was the best we have had in all of our cruising. The room did not have a fridge (disappointing) but Jose mad sure we had plenty of ice. We had brought 2 bottles of wine with us and utilized the wastebasket for a wine chiller. It was never without ice. Perhaps the fact that Jose was leaving on the return date and going hoe to the Philippines to see his family before returning in Nov to the Magic.

The ship itself was clean and the décor was a nice change as it was a bit more subtle than other ships we have cruised on. There were many dining options and a lot of places throughout the ship. However, the main complaint (and there were many more than just ours) was that when the ship was changed from the Destiny to the Sunshine a lot of stuff was added without too much thought of what the impact would be on space. That made the ship seem very crowded. It felt like the proverbial 2 lbs of butter in a one pound bag. We have sailed twice on the Dream and never felt crowded even though there are many more passengers on the Dream. That being said, the crew was upbeat and friendly. We were always greeted with a smile and happy faces when interacting with the crew.

The food was good but not great. However, we didn't return any of it to the kitchen and we all gained a few pounds. Entertainment was the usual fare with nothing really outstanding. Comedy club was very entertaining and even though the late performances were R rated none of them that we went to were overly abusive or extremely raunchy.

So our grades for this cruise: Dining room wait staff and service: A; Room steward: A++; Food: B-; Entertainment: B; Ship itself: C; and overall an B+. We would recommend the Sunshine for a destination cruise rather than a destination ship. And as usual any day cruising is better than any day on land. Thanks for reading.

Master Chief, thanks for the review. We sailed on this as the Destiny and even then it felt very crowded, for that reason we don't plan on sailing it again.

We were also on this cruise and it was quite enjoyable. I think I have uploaded most pictures and will be continuing my review as time permits.

It was fortunate the storm dissipated and had no affect on our cruise.

One other thing I forgot to mention: cigarette smoke in the casino was out of control. There are designated areas in the casino for smoking and non-smoking but these areas were never repeat never enforced. I was under the impression that in order to smoke in the casino you had to be actively playing the slots or the table games. Many times a group of 5-6 smokers were just standing around smoking. If Carnival isn't going to enforce the areas then they should upgrade the smoke eaters in the ventilation system to handle the smoke. I haven't noticed that much smoke on the other ships so maybe they didn't upgrade the ventilation system from the Destiny. However, the smoke didn't keep me out of the casino. I just carried a bottle of eye drops with me.
