Default Memories of Ray & Helen

After reading Trip's and Tweety's sad news from Ray today,
I thought it would be a nice idea to share some of our memories of Helen and what a wonderful lady she was.

My first and only time meeting this dynamic duo was on the Cruisemtes "Cruise of the Century" over New Years 06/07.
In Key West during that cruise, CruiseMates gathered at Margaritaville for drinks and I remember thinking what great sports Ray & Helen were to be there with us.
Here is my memory of that day:

We had the pleasure of sailing with Ray & Helen with Kuki & other CM folks out of NOLA...

I wish I had a picture of this, but, on the Century cruise, it was Ray & Helen's 60th anniversary. The wonderful look on their faces, when we surprised them with a beautiful gift, was worth it's weight in gold.

So many Cruisemates wanted to contribute we were also able to send them to the Albert & Victoria's Restaurant at the Grand Floridian, for a romantic dinner. That this lovely couple is so loved, is not surprising...That Rd and I sang to them was This was a forever memory.

From the first Let's Get Lei'd Cruise in 2002. The entire group enjoyed a Luau in Maui. Ray and Helen were everyone's cruising idols, even then...

Then we repeated, and Got Lei'd Again in 2004. This time we were sailing late out of Honolulu, so we had a Pajama party at midnight for sailaway.
(sure some will remember Ron(Popee) as well, who is also sadly no longer with us.

The next day the CD told me people were asking why they hadn't been told there was a Pajama Party on the aft deck for sail a way. They'd have loved to join in.

I think in both these pictures, if you look in their eyes, you can see the spark that made them so special.

Default Sweet Helen

This is Marc's wife Arlene. I have been thinking about Ray and Helen all day today and know that she will be greatly missed. When I saw this thread for memories of Helen I just had to post.

About 5 or 6 years ago when Marc and I still lived in Florida, we had Ray and Helen and Gaile and Harry over for dinner. Our house had glass front doors and it was warm and humid outside. We had all the lights on inside while it had gotten dark out. When everyone was getting ready to leave I looked at the front door and saw about 10 of those frogs with those little suction feet stuck all over the front door. Needless to say that when we opened the door and were saying goodnight one jumped into the house. I was absolutely dreading chasing it down and catching it so I could toss it back outside. Helen took one look at my face and in that sweet wonderful voice of hers said "Oh Honey I've lived in the tropics, I'll go get it" and she did!! Just walked over and picked it up and then walked over and tossed it outside! I will never forget it.... It seems nothing ever fazed her! She was such a lady. I know I will never meet anyone quite like her and I know she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

After many years on the boards here, I was very anxious and excited to meet Ray and Helen in person. When my Husband and I first met Ray and Helen, we were so impressed with what an attentive, sweet and loving couple they were after being married all those years. Helen was a fantastic story teller. I asked her about her childhood and she told me about her family and what it was like to grow up in the south as a young lady. I asked how she and Ray met and what the secret was to the longevity of their marriage. She was a delight to get to know. She was unpretentious and very easy to talk to.

They treated my children as their Grandkids and spoiled them rotten. Just the other day we were looking at the porcelain Mardi Gras masks they gave the children and the kids asked how they were doing.

As I posted on Facebook earlier today when I heard the sad news of Helen's passing. I fell in love with Ray and Helen's love story. Spend a few minutes with them and you could see the love and respect they had for one another that had endured the test of time. When a couple shares a love that deep, it doesn't matter if they have 10 years or 100 years together, it will never be long enough. My heart goes out to Ray and I know his heart is breaking. It is so hard to say goodbye to your best friend. I am so happy we were able to see them in December at our Florida get together when Liam and Jackie visited.

Trip, I too have fond memories of that cocktail party on the Cruise of the Century when we presented Ray & Helen with their gifts. Here is another photo I found of that day:

It was an honour to honour such a loving and special couple on their 60th (or was it 65th?) anniversary.

We have had the honor and pleasure to share many cruises with Ray and Helen and are fortunate to know them both. Since Helen and I were both military wives, we shared lots of "stories" and had so much in common.

Our first encounter with them was on a cruise many, many years ago. We had all gone to dinner the night before and walked to the restaurant. Helen and Ray were miles ahead of us, not only in numbers of cruises or years together but in distance as well. The rest of the group had a hard time catching and keeping up with them. I was amazed as they left the rest of us in the dust. I was amazed too at their love through the years and consider myself lucky to have shared many of their milestone celebrations of longevity with them in person.

I know Helen is looking for her "lipstick" right now as she was always the totally put together package from head to toe. Ray, please take comfort knowing that she was in wonderful hands on earth in the form of you and continues to be in wonderful hands now. Cherish your memories and you will meet again to share those memories.

Linda, you made me giggle because, that came to my mind yesterday too. I think we were walking from the Bimnini Boatyard...I rememeber them so far ahead of us, and, thinking damn they are good!

Maybe it was when we all went on the Golden Princess...2001?

We are all richer for knowing Helen!

Helen was a sweet, funny, interesting and kind woman. We greatly enjoyed the times we spent with them.

On Maui we did a car caravan up the Road to Hanna. Ray handled the curves like an Indy race car driver and we had a wonderful and memorabl day. On our stops Helen would tell us of her and Ray's life together and all the wonderful places they had been. You could always see how much they loved each other and there was never a tense word between them.

Here is a picture taken at Charles Lindbergh's grave on Maui.

Take care,
Mike
