My friend is Ukrainian citizen, but she lost her Ukrainian passport. She is an American resident. Can she use her green card and license to board a ship? This cruise includes ports St. Maarten, Puerto Rico and Bahamas.

The short answer is "yes" if it is a closed loop cruise. There is a possibility that she may need a passport.
LRP (Legal Permanent Resident) is a Green Card Holder. Here is a link from the Customs and Border Patrol Department that explains more. Just note: If she misses the ship at one of the islands it will be even more of a problem for her to fly back to the U.S. without a passport, even if she is a green card holder. https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/det...3D/suggested/1 Take care, Mike

Thank you very much Mike, but "A Caribbean island that does not require a U.S. Citizen to have a passport may require a U.S. LPR to have one, and a visa as well."
It still doesn't give me 100% warranty that a passport is not required. I called to MSC agent, and he said that a passport and visa IS required. Then I called to Carnival agent and he said, that a passport IS NOT required. He was assured, so I hope he was correct. |

Please excuse my ignorance here, but isn't there a governtment depart that you could ask & get written confirmation if you want a 100% guarantee?
Alan (in the UK)

I agree with Alan!
Contact the embassy or the State Department and ask them. NEVER take anyone else's word for something like this, especially not the cruise line representatives. They know absolutely nothing! It's better to find out from those in authority because anything less may cause you to be denied boarding and you'd lose your money. Pete

Thank you all for suggestions, I decided to go. No one to whom I called, gave me exact clear answer, except Carnival agent. All these guys either told me to call somewhere else, where I already called, or gave me some government sites, that I already checked.
I will let you know where was the truth |

I already turned back from a cruise. If anyone is looking an answer to the same question, I can confirm - Yes, green-card is enough!
Unfortunately, some agents pretending to look "professional" giving a wrong answer instead of honestly admit, that they don't know the answer. I feel sorry for one my friend, who already had tickets for the cruise, but having the same situation (green-card only), he trusted to wrong answer of an agent and miss the cruise... |
