Default Good old boy system at work...General get's off easy

I wondered how women in the armed services or even outside would feel about this General Sinclair getting off with a slap on the wrist. I know I wasn't at the trial, but it seems that the colonel who was that judge in this case probably was thinking about his career when he made this decision. What really is irritating is that is the fine is a pitance of what the man earns.

I hope that his victim sues him for damages.

By Tracy Connor
Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Sinclair who struck a plea deal after being accused of sexually assaulting his former lover was sentenced Thursday to pay $24,100 in fines and restitution, but not jailed or demoted.

The most serious charges against Sinclair, 51, were dropped as part of the deal he made midway through his high-profile court martial, but he still could have faced prison time.

Instead, a military judge gave him a reprimand, ordered him to pay $5,000 a month for four months, plus $4,100 for improper use of his official credit card, NBC affiliate WNCN reported from Fort Bragg, N.C.

His rank was not reduced, but if it's unclear of his pension will be intact.

Sen. Kristen Gillibrand, D-N.Y., whose bill to strip brass of their authority of sexual assault cases, said the Sinclair case shows the military justice system is "in dire need of independence from the chain of command."

"It's not only the right thing to do for our men and women in uniform, but would also mitigate issues of undue command influence that we have seen in many trials over the last year," she said.

"When survivors and defense attorneys both agree we need to reform the system, it should tell us the system needs reform.

He still has to go before a disciplinary board separate from the trial and from what I've read there is a possibility they will reduce him in rank to either O-5 or O-6 (Lt. Colonel or Colonel). Also, the Secretary Of The Army has to approve the retirement of General Officers and he could decide to reduce this guy in rank for retirement purposes.

This trial was pretty "rank!"

Good people sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

Courage and perserverance have a magical talisman; before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish into the air.

Pick your company wisely! Hang around people who are going to help you become all God created you to be.

Default Appreciate input about possible punishment for Sinclair

Thanks for the input about the potential penalties General Sinclair may face. I personally wonder if the good old boy military club will protect him from really the tougher penalties you outlined. Of course, I hope the female victim would or could take this into a civilian court since his admission of guilt would probably result in a win for her and get her compensation for financial damages like those awarded in the OJ civil trial.

On a related subject I recently discovered the documentary the " Invisible War" which covered the rape situation in the military. The "Invisible War" presents an excellent view of what is happening in the military. In case you haven't seen it, It's an investigative documentary about one of America's most shameful and best-kept secrets: the epidemic of rape within the U.S. military. "Today, a female soldier in combat zones is more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier then killed by enemy fire. Twenty percent of all active duty female servicewoman are sexually assaulted." Source: Invisible War 2012 back cover.
That statistic is hard to believe, but I guess its just human nature at work.
