Yes: You will need your birth certificate.

Here is a link to the State Department's website that will provide you with all the documentation and requirements you will need to take with you to obtain the passport.

How to Apply in Person For a Passport

Take care,
Mike

Not only do you need to take the birth certificates with you, but they need them to go along with the application. When they send you the passport, they will send back the BC's.

I hope they don't get lost. I will make copies of them before we hand them over.

Susan - if for any reason your birth certificate gets lost in the passport application. A copy that you make is not going to work for identification. It must be a certified copy.

When go to the county office to obtain your birth certificate it is a good idea to get two. You can use one for applying for the passport or other identification needs and put the other in a safe deposit box or other safe place, in the event you need an extra copy.

If you already have one it never hurts to get another. If you are in the process of obtaining a "hard to get" birth certificate (foreign, lost, or other) it always is in your best interest to obtain more than one.

Take care,
Mike

It takes a little while to fill out each application. If possible, go to the Post Office ahead of time and get the forms. They ask a lot of questions, such as where your parents were born, etc and if I remember correctly there was about 4 pages to fill out. DO NOT SIGN THE APPLICATION ahead of time, this MUST be done in front of the postal clerk, and I hope I'm remembering correctly, you could not use a credit card, you had to use a debit card or cash for the fee. Something about the fees had to be divided up, part of the fee was retained by the post office for their trouble, and the balance of the fee was sent(I think they used a postal money order)with the application and original or certified copy of the birth certificate. You must also bring your driver's license. Check with the post office about those fees before you stand in line and don't have the correct credit card, debit card, etc.
