Question How to handle port stops

We are a family of four with two young children (7 and 5). We purchased the excursion to Universal at Port Canaveral (yes, I know I might have saved a few dollars doing it on our own, but once I factored in the hassle of the rental car pick up and return, parking, and traffic, I decided the excursion was the way to go).

What are the best bets in Nassau and Freeport? Is traffic enough of an issue that getting a day pass to a resort is a bad idea? If we are going to wander around by ourselves in one of the ports, which is better (safety; things to do)?

Thanks so much,
Newbie (cruisin123)
