Ok, so I’m wondering why when people cruise and stop in ST Thomas everyone say’s go to ST John?
Is it nicer? It’s one of our stops and we planned on doing Megan’s beach but I was told again today to take the ferry to ST John instead. What gives?? ![]() |

If you love to snorkle, that is the main attraction there & just fabulous postcard beaches. There is a very small shopping district, and most of the island is protected land.
If you don't snorkel, and, like the hustle and bustle, stick to Charlotte Amalie, & Megans Bay. Last edited by Trip; April 15th, 2012 at 09:21 AM. |

Yes it is a nice place but Megans is too. Depending on how many ships are in port that day all of the popular beaches can get crowded. Some have full service w/restrooms/food/drink and some are bare bones.
You have be be aware of the timetable for the taxi to Red Hook then the ferry to STJ. You would get maybe 4 hrs beach time max when you take into account the taxi and ferry time getting to STJ. If you want to learn more about the area have a read over at Virgin Islands Travel Information . They also have an area similar to this where the locals can answer questions for you. Btw, there are some who get picky about the spelling of Megans from its history. You may see it spelled differently.

We've gone to St. John twice, both snorkeling trips via catamaran. Yes, the beach is wonderful, so is the snorkeling, but the catamaran ride is also wonderful, especially the one with the champagne and "Painkillers", sandwiches and fantastic music!
Also done Megan's Bay beach and other beaches in St. Thomas, and loved them all, but then I'm a beach person.... donna

I have to say that St. Thomas can be crowded, especially when there are are four or more ships in port.
I go to St. John's just to get away from those crowds and enjoy the more serene beauty. I am not a shopper and I went to Megan's Beach once and was not impressed. It was a very crowded beach. I have been to St. John's three times and each time I have gone to St. John's on my own. On our last cruise with family and friends they did a Carnival excursion to St. John's and liked it but were very disappointed in the short time they spent there. They had less than an hour at Trunk Bay. Doing it on your own and knowing the Red Hook ferry schedule you can spend three or four hours at Trunk Bay or other places on St. John's. It's also a lot less expensive. Carnival charged $95/person for the excursion and you can do it yourself, with taxi and ferry fares, for around $30. Take care, Mike

Trunk Bay, St. John's Island is one of my alltime favourites ... haven't been there in years though.
I think because of the time to get there and the $$$, you will simply get fewer people making the effort. The majority will go to Magen's Bay and Coral World (?). I have a wonderful memory of being at Megan's Bay with my DH on our honeymoon. It must have been a quiet day in port, because there was hardly anyone there. Last year we went with the kids, and the place was a zoo - all the big ships were in port. If you have the luxury of time and money - I'd definitely go to St. John.

St Johns Trunk Bay was always on the listings for top beaches in years past. Every time we were there it was alot less crowded than Megans Bay. In my opinion definitely worth the taxi and ferry ride to get to. I think it is one of the most beautiful beaches I have every seen. I just talked my girlfriend and her family to go to Trunk Bay instead of Megans Bay and they agreed with me. They had previously been to Megans Bay.

Trunk Bay is fabulous. If you snorkel at all, it also has a marked underwater snorkling trail that's terrific.
INHO Megan's Bay has nice views, but that's the best adjective I'd offer. Trunk Bay is worth the trouble of getting there.
