Default Boxing ring on board Freedom

Royal Caribbean honcho Adam Goldstein donned boxing shorts and gloves at the New York Health and Racket Club in Manhattan today to announce the first-ever full-size boxing ring on a cruise ship, part of the expansive fitness program planned when the Freedom of the Seas makes its debut. The ship is due to arrive in the U.S. on May 11 and make its maiden voyage from Miami on June 4.

The Fight Klub aboard Freedom of the Seas will offer Rocky wannabes one-on-one training sessions with an experienced instructor in a full-size 20' by 20' regulation ring, as well as the use of training gear such as speed bags, jump ropes, heavy bags and padded punching mitts. Groups of three can take part in sparring sessions with freestanding body master bags, supervised by an on-site boxing coach. Serious enthusiasts can train in three one-hour sessions with a coach.

Together with cruising's first surf park, announced earlier, the boxing program will give Freedom of the Seas one of the most unique fitness programs afloat.

Boxing is just one of the new options announced by Goldstein today. The new ship will also offer cruising's first dedicated Pilates reformer group exercise program in a studio equipped with six reformer machines. The ship will introduce to cruisers the Next Generation Power-Plate, a machine resembling a large scale that vibrates subtly between 30 to 50 times per second, stimulating increased blood flow to muscles and joints that greatly increases the efficiency of a workout.

Another first for cruise ships is the Life Fitness Cable Motion Series, which provides strength training while allowing exercisers the freedom to move limbs independently of one another or to use different weights for each limb. Freedom of the Seas will be the first ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet to equip every piece of cardio equipment with a personal LCD screen to keep guests entertained while they work out.

Runners will benefit from a new partnership with New Balance, makers of athletic shoes and clothing. New Balance will provide mapped routes at select ports of call so that a run can be enjoyed safely and without concern about measuring distance.

The company will also help with walking and running activities using the onboard running track, and will provide a self-service kiosk for those in training for races, from 5K to Marathons. Like all the staff at the new conference, the cruise and sports staff will be outfitted in New Balance footwear and apparel.
