Default Carnival Vista damages port in Italy

Reports are that no one was hurt. Which is a good thing. But that is some scare stuff.

What was the pilot doing? He's in control of the ship...no communications ?

Cruise ships have more power than you might think.

Apparently they just accelerated faster than they should have and didn't even know anything was wrong. They found out later by radio.

Does the captain chose the speed or is it given to him by the pilot? I bet the pilot/captain wasn't prepared for a ship this big and used a speed that has worked in the past. I would be so upset if that was my boat in the marina. I'm glad no one was on those boats. That could have been so bad.

I don't ever recall being in a port on a cruise ship with small boats so close, didn't anyone think of that...?

Even if the pilot was "driving" the boat, Carnival will take the hit. The Captain is still in control even when the pilot is at the helm.

It was purely a negligent mistake. Who was negligent is still up in the air but there will be "splainin to do".

Take care,
Mike

Somewhere (I've seen video, etc., on several sites) I read that the wind was a big factor in this accident. Still, I personally expect the Captain and the Pilot to bring the ship out to sea without damaging anything.
As Mike said, Carnival will take the hit.

I think the Captain and the pilot feel like Steve Urkel.

Take care,
Mike

Actually, Carnival Corp's Maritime Operating Insurance will take the hit. No biggie.
When the Costa Concordia was lost, Company shares went down, not because of the loss of a (fully-insured) billion-dollar asset, but because of a perceived loss of confidence by the cruise-buying public at large. Even the negligence/wrongful death lawsuits were/are probably fully covered, I'm guessing.
