Default Did You Ever Hear This?

Does anyone remember, the sort of urban legend about the woman who sat on the john, on a cruise ship, and had her insides pulled outside, from the vacumn flush?

I had never heard about this, till today..There is a show called Urban Legends, which gives you 3 scenarios, two are legends, & one is true, They give you the true info at the end, about the real story.

It took place in port in Vancouver, on the ship, Pegasus, which was fortunate for the woman, who was brought to the hospital and recovered.

There was a Dr,and his wife, who was a nurse, onboard, who were asked to help, and were just horrified at what had happened to her....

Have you ever heard about this, I did a google on it, to read more about it... I wonder if the flushing systems are still the same, or have been improved upon, since this incident, or if it was just a combination of things that, attributed to this happening.

Yes, I had heard of it and the MYTHBUSTERS on the Discovery channel, attempted to recreate it and the myth was ....

BUSTED!!

While they could not recreate it for tv, sadly, it happened. Here is a bit of what I found..

Sam Malad, a spokesman for the now-defunct Neptune Cruises, which booked passengers aboard the Pegasus to accommondate overflow from Expo 86, called the incident a "real human tragedy" but said he did not know if any precautions have since been taken.

"Malad said he did not know whether a lawsuit had been filed as a result of the incident.

New York representatives for Epirotiki Lines, owner of Pegasus, defered inquiries to their home office in Athens, where no one could be reached for comment.

One would have to be the "human gasket" in order for this to arise. I've heard of this happening in swimming pools and hot tubs, but never on a cruise ship. I guess she managed to become a human seal on the commode, sadly for her.

I bent tar on that ship and I was working that day, too. It happened, to be sure.

During Expo86, New Westminster, BC, Canada, in the Fraser River. the Pegasus was being used as a floating hotel because accomodations were tough to come by in the Vancouver area during Expo.

Word got around quick and the whole ship staff and crew were horrified. See, those toilets were monster scary - loud and sucked like crazy...we all thought so even before the "incident".

We were aboard the ship Jason which was one of the Epirotiki Cruise line and was docked at Vancouver in 1986 after a 12 day cruise to Alaska. The Pegasas was docked near us and we did hear of the incident at that time. True story.

RayB, you know, I actually think I remember when Jason came by....the World Renaissance was here as well - all together in a row, 1, 2, 3 in the Fraser for the one and only time, I believe, while Pegasus was here.

I have heard this many times over the years. I have checked Snopes over and over again to find no mention of this anywhere. Could it be true?? Who knows? Stranger things have happened!

Now I feel bad, because I have joked about the bathrooms on cruise ships. I had no idea it could actually happen.

So sad, but I have a feeling that it was a set of circumstances that allowed it to happen, and would not otherwise happen to just anyone.

I'm sorry for this lady, but frankly, I don't think it could happen anymore. As someone else stated, it would take a perfect gasket on the seat for this to happen, and I think the seat is designed differently now as well, so that it can't happen. I guess next time we sail, I'm going to have to make an educated inspection of the toilet seat. I'd bet that it can't happen again,,,,,and if so, it'd be very easy to design a toilet, and/or seat that would make it impossible for it to happen.
