Default Cozumel Excursions - Mayan ruins of Tulum

Hi, planned on going to see the Mayan ruins of Tulum while we are on the week-end trip to Cozumel. Found out after we booked that the Holiday does not offer that excursion on that date. This is the only port of call on this trip. Has anyone did this trip on their own, by renting a car or using a local tour? Is it worth the trip and trouble? Thanks.

How long are you in Cozumel for?

Many times the excursion isn't offered, unless you are in Cozumel for a ridiculous amount of time.

You have to take a ferry ride to the mainland, then a bus ride down the coast to Tulum. (something like two hours travel or more each way, from what I read researching this excursion for our last trip to Cozumel.)

I would be hesitant to try this excursion on my own, with so many different points where things could go wrong, getting back to the ship.
(bus or cab breaking down, missing a ferry, ferry engine problems, etc...)

It is an amazing looking excursion though.
Hopefully someday, our port time in Cozumel will allow time for it, for us to try.

Bill

We did this with a ship tour once and we ended up only getting back to the pier about 45 minutes til we had to be back on board. It is a long trip from Playa and back with not a lot of time at the ruins.

I would not try this without either a very long time in port or it being a ship tour.

We took this tour a couple of years ago and it was a really nice tour. We booked through Carnival and had to catch a ferry, and then a bus that stopped at a souvenir shop. Our port day was long, though, and we were back on the ship in plenty of time. Our ship left port at 10 p.m. so we had more than enough time. I wouldn't do this tour on my own, though. The ride to the ruins is very long.

While I love Tulum, I would never try to do it on my own. On one trip, the ferry back to Cozumel broke down. If it had not been a ship's tour, we would have been stranded.

There are some interesting smaller sites on the island of Cozumel. San Gervaso was pretty good for one.
While Tulum was good as well, please be adviced that it's all roped off. I was able to enter one structure, a very smallish cenote house.
In my opinion, one would be best to seek a tour that sticks to Cozumel island & its sites such as San Gervasio.

I believe that San Gervasio was wiped out by a hurricane. What they have now is a replica. Too bad, as it was a nice, although small, example of Mayan architecture.

Agreed. Don't attempt this on your own. It's an all day trip and if your late, and on your own....you can get left behind
