Default Afternoon in San Juan

We are looking at a cruise that will stop in San Juan from 2:30 in the afternoon to 10:00 at night. Is that enough time (in April) to make a run to EL Yungue and back? Also, we love listening to Salsa, but understand the clubs in San Juan really don't get started until after 11:00. Is this true?

Doubt you'd have enough time to get to the rain forest that late in the day. You can still wonder around Old San Juan, check out the forts, shop, etc.

What in the heck are they thinking when they schedule San Juan as port of call? Arrive at 3 pm and depart at midnight.? One actually arrives at noon and departs at 3 pm.
I loved Old San Juan and the El Yungue rain forest and can't understand why the port times don't seem to accommodate those sites.

Our time will be 2 to 8--also not great esp if you want to eat on land--dinner starts at 6 pm & then you'd have to rush to get back on board..I want to get to the parrot club at least for a drink so we may try it anyhow....

dlm - if your ship offers an excursion to the rainforest i would book it, that way you know you will have the time.

Thanks Lisa (and everyone). On our last cruise we booked a number of non-affiliated excurisions, but with an hour and a half to two hours to get to El Yungue, I would definately book through the ship. This far out, RCCL does not show the availablity of excursions, so I guess I just have to wait and see.

As to nightlife in San Juan, perhaps we will just eat early in the Windjammer and give it a try. Hopefully there is live music within walking distance of the ship (or at least a short taxi ride).

One other thing. I heard that the shops in Old San Juan close around 5:00. Is this true?

The forts closed at 4 or half past 4, at least when I was there in 2002. San Cristobal and El Morro are SO impressive, so not going in was a huge disappointment.
