Smile Advice for first time cruisers- Alaska June 19, 2013

My husbad and I are taking our first cruise in a month, aboard the Grand Princess. We will be celebrating our 1 year wedding anniversary and his birthday. Any tips or must see/ do things on the ship or while at port? Any advice would be amazing!!

That's a tough question to answer since we all have such different opinions on what we love about cruising, especially Alaska.
There are tons of things to do on the ship, including my favorite, sitting and watching nature glide by. If you gamble there's a casino. There is a movie theater, classes, sports events, tours, a library. Too many to mention. Believe me, you'll find something to enjoy each and every day on the ship.
You don't mention if you have any tours booked. Here are some port activities we loved.
Juneau: Mendenall glacier. Don't miss it. Whale watching if you love that type of nature. Walking around the town. We didn't do this but I hear that the salmon hatchery's a nice place to see.
Skagway: White pass rail was a fun, relaxing and educational trip. Or take a scenic bus/van tour of the area.
Ketchikan: The Duck tour was fun. A bit silly but fun. Walk over to Creek street and take the funicular up to the hotel and then stroll down the married man's trail.
All the towns have a ton of shopping. We enjoyed doing our own walking tours in the towns too.
You're in for a huge treat. Alaska's an awesome place to visit on a cruise ship. Happy anniversary and birthday.

I highly suggest whale watching - Juneau is the easiest place to do it.

In Sitka there is "bears, salmon & Eagles" tour that takes you to refiges for bears, another for eagles, and a hatchery. It is really cool to see wild but rescued aninals that have been saved.

Be sure to count on the shore tours to see Alaska - if you don't take the tours your won;t see the good stuff there.

A helicopter tour to Mendenhall Glacier is expensive but really cool.

I think any trip to Juneau would be missing something if you didn't stop at Tracey's Crab Shack. It's kind of expensive, but the Crab legs are huge, and worth the novelty. They also sell fun t-shirts and sweatshirts that say. "I got Crabs at Tracy's"

It is true, even the locals go there, but it is just an outdoor food stand (just so you know). You should see it right when you walk off the ship - it stays in the pier area.

You will love cruising!
We were on the Grand last year, but it was to Mexico and into the Sea of Cortez.
A beautiful ship. We loved the extended balcony that had 1/2 the top uncovered and it was during a Peak time of a Meteor Shower. Every night we sat on Balcony and counted the shooting stars. We bought the coffee package and took advantage of the specialty drinks often.
There was one night towards the end when it was formal night that they had a big balloon drop in the center area of the ship while a band played, everyone danced and our cruise director sang a song by The Doors called Roadhouse Blues.
Very Memorable. Princess will most likely have a lecture on something interesting. Do go to this. Ours on this ship was about Whales and since the ship will be in Alaska, they probably will have it again.
If I think of anything else I will post again. Have Fun.
We are going back to Alaska a few weeks after you. It has been 8 years.
