Princess Cruises Grand Princess
Western Mediterranean
August 30, 2005

My wife and I went on a 25th anniversary cruise for 12 days-leaving August 30th 2005 on the Grand Princess. It was our first time on a cruise and first time in Europe. The first 2/3 of the cruise was great-we enjoyed the food & entertainment. But after we departed from the 5th port of the scheduled 9 ports on our itinerary, the ship started experiencing engine problems. They had to skip 2 of the scheduled ports in Turkey and we arrived one day early in the next port (which was Athens). Because we arrived one day early, they wern't able to accommodate our excursions. So, for 4 days the whole intinerary was messed up. We missed ports that we were really looking forward to going to. Many, many people were extremely disappointed. The cruise lines offered each passenger $400 each as a good will gesture for the inconveience. We thought this was a "slap in the face" since we spent almost $12,000 including our air fare to take this holiday. I contacted the head office while I was on the ship, they wern't helpful at all. I sent 2 letters of complaint after I got back to discuss futher compensation but they refused. They mentioned several times that they have a right to change the itinerary at their own discretion. It is too bad that a large company such as Princess Cruise lines depends on "one sided" contracts such as the ones we all have to agree to sign when travelling with them. I will never use Princess Cruise lines again and I really caution others who are consider travelling with them. They really disappointed us!
