Cruise West by cweisberger Spirit of Endeavour Alaska May 30, 2003
The Spirit of Endeavour is a very comfortable ship and excellently maintained. The Cruise West philosophy is friendly service, and they excel at it. From the Captain through the deck hands, the smiles and warmth make guests comfortable instantly.
The food was excellent in keeping with the service. Cabins were roomy enough and quite comfortable. Each one has a TV/VCR but the cruise was busy enough that we never used it. There is an Exploration Leader aboard who provides educational information and makes sure there are no hitches in the service.
The ship's decor was very nice, and the Spirit of Endeavour rode the waves quite smoothly, although the Inside Passage that we cruised is rather sheltered. There was a total crew of 28 for the 102 passengers. The Customer Service Reps waited tables and serviced the guestrooms. They were all cheerful and attractive college students or post-grads who were engaging and popular with the passengers. While they weren't quite as polished as professional waiters, they were more than accommodating.
The ship sails into areas where the monster liners cannot go. Sometimes it seemed as if one could reach out to the shore. There is an emphasis on nature; the exploration leader was a naturalist and quite knowledgeable. We made many sightings of animal life, and got full explanations of what we were seeing.
Passengers on our cruise seemed to be unanimous in feeling that their expectations were exceeded. If I had any complaint, it would be that the food was too rich and ignored prudent dietary guidelines. There always were viable alternatives available, however, so that observation is relative. I'm sure that everyone who cruised with us would share my high opinion of this cruise line, its staff and this vessel.
