Norwegian Cruise Line Pride of Aloha Hawaii July 18, 2004

I enjoy the freestyle cruising and feel the Norwegian Cruise line is one of the best of the major cruise lines. I am a member of the Norwegian Cruise line latitudes program for frequent cruisers.

The ship is very attractive although an older ship, the cabins are somewhat small by the standards of the newer mega ships. The Hawaiian Islands are a wonderful Cruise destination.

When I got to the ship I found that the cabin had not been made up and was not completed until about 7 p.m. that day. Apparently a number of the housekeeping staff had quit the ship at the end of the previous Cruise. Also the regular dining rooms and the bars were also understaffed. However that was not the case with the premium dining rooms they were well staffed food and service was superb.

I got the impression that the American workers were finding the work to demanding and the pay too low. It's a sad commentary that the Norwegian Cruise lines is having a difficulty finding American workers to staff this ship especially when we are told so many jobs are going overseas.

I also heard that they were having trouble getting foreign workers because foreign workers could not pass the strict Coast Guard security requirements.

The rest of my cruise experience was excellent and up to the standards that have come to expect from Norwegian Cruise lines. I'm sure that in time the company will be able to overcome their staffing problems.
