My husband and I just returned from a 4 day, 3 night cruise on board the American Queen and totally loved the experience. We wanted to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary in style - and style we got! We have cruised all over the Caribbean and by far this was the best cruise ever. The cabin was beautiful - traditional southern victorian style and quite large by cruise standards. We had a deluxe outside on Deck 5. We lucked out by getting an end cabin with two entrances with French Doors. We had a direct view of the Mississippi River as there were two chairs and a small table to enjoy the view. The food was excellent with both regional and All-American fair.
There was something to do every minute of the day. We wished we had more time on board as we had booked back-to-back shore tours and missed out on the day's events. Many interesting things to choose from from Mardi Gras mask making contests to Cajun dancing lessons! Our favorite part of the "boat" was the Front Porch where you could relax on a porch swing or rocking chair, have continental breakfast and enjoy the passing scenery. Other options for breakfast was a nicely presented buffet in the Grand Saloon or table service in the main dining room. First night lobster was on the menu and was excellent and presented well. One of the best events was the "Shrimp Boil" served on the sun deck with all the fixins. This is not to be missed. Totally different than any cruise we've been on. Evening entertainment consisted of a piano lounge, Engine Room Bar with sing-a-longs and variety entertainment in the Grand Saloon. My husband and I are "approaching 50" and I will say the median age on this cruise was 65-70. Our fellow passengers were wonderful people and so interesting. We enjoyed ourselves immensely and are anxious to book a longer cruise with this line.
