Rumors of a new river European cruise line that have been floating around for a number of months have finally been confirmed. The new company is Emerald Waterways - ready too set sail April 15, 2014 at fares starting at $2,230 per person, double occupancy. The new line will boast the industry's newest ships, offering such amenities as a heated swimming pool that transforms into a movie theater at night. Emerald Waterways is aiming at both experienced travelers and the younger demographic looking for strong value and great pricing on eight- to 15-day itineraries.
What sets Emerald Waterways apart?
The line will launch with two brand new river boats; Emerald Star and Emerald Sky - each carrying 182 guests in 72 suites and 20 staterooms (two of those staterooms are built for solo passengers). The onboard heated swimming pool will have a retractable roof and transform into a movie theater. Each boat will have two restaurants - Reflections, the main dining room, and The Terrace for breakfast and lunch. A new type of cabin design will replace the common French Balcony with a possible indoor balcony transformation when guests can push a button and the upper half of the floor to ceiling panoramic window drops down to the open-air. Top suites will separate the balcony from the cabin with sliding glass doors.
The company is also boasting of exceptional value with the following included in the cruise fare: all transfers to and from the ships; all onboard (and most on shore) meals; a choice of two dining venues each with unlimited tea and coffee; wine, beer and soft drinks with lunch and dinner; bottled water in the cabins; continental breakfast, pre-dinner canapés and after-dinner sweet treats served in the top suites. There is Wi-Fi onboard the ships, at least one included shore excursion on almost every cruise day and visits to many UNESCO World Heritage Sites. There will also be onboard hairdressers, massage therapy room and fitness areas.
Emerald Waterway claims its staterooms are bigger than the river cruise industry average with the Owner's One-bedroom Suites (315 sq. ft.) containing a separate bedroom and lounge and a walk-in wardrobe. A complimentary mini-bar is re-stocked daily with wine, beer and soft drinks; a Nespresso specialty coffee maker and even an iPad are included for use throughout the cruise. Next comes the Grand Balcony and Owner Suite where guests who can order an in-suite continental breakfast, pre-dinner canapés and after-dinner sweet treats to enjoy in their staterooms, all of which are included in the cruise fare.
All gratuities will also be included on all sailings, as well as port charges that normally range from $200 to $400 per person per cruise.
Emerald Waterways has infused all of its itineraries with a number of branded "EmaraldPLUS" excursions - which the line says will uncover more than just the usual tourist attractions. Examples include glass-blowing demonstrations, a glass-top canal cruise in Amsterdam, the Winzerexpress mini-train, and a night of dancing and entertainment at a local Czech tavern - to name just a few. All of these examples are also included in the cruise fares.
Itineraries are designed to allow for a greater amount of flexibility - giving guests enough free time to explore Europe their way - with a cruise director and crew who are more than happy to offer expert advice and help plan the independent time.
